It is true that objections are buying signs. When you are talking to a hiring authority or being interviewed, it is important to welcome objections. That may sound counter-intuitive, but you must realize that objections are buying signs or requests for more information. There is NOTHING more frustrating than to think that an interview or conversation went well, then you never hear back.
If no objections have been raised, ask if there are any concerns or ask if this person feels you have the experience and skills they need. This provides you with an opportunity to address any concerns they may have, while you stress your accomplishments and the impact they have had on your past employers. The only objection you can’t overcome is silence. It is easier to overcome objections if you try to anticipate them in advance, so you are prepared to effectively address them. Objections are in one of four categories: price, personal, service or postponement. When you identify the category of the objection, it is easier to overcome the objection.
A good transition phrase would be “I can understand why you feel that way, but let me explain why that won’t be an issue…” You don’t want to come across as confrontative when you overcome an objection. In addition to welcoming objections, you also want to stress your high level of interest as well as the confidence you have in your ability to perform the job.
If you are not overcoming objections, you are making a customer service vs. a sales presentation. Job searching is a sales process and often it is the job seeker who best overcomes objections who is hired!
